Nelson Lazo, CEO of Doctors Hospital in Coral Gables and Miami Orthopedics & Sports Medicine Institute since 2010, has deep roots in South Florida where he has contributed much of his time, talent and treasure.
After receiving his Bachelor of Science degree in 1984 from Barry University, Nelson went on the earn his master’s degree in business administration from Nova Southeastern University’s H. Wayne Huizenga School of Business and Entrepreneurship in 1990.
In fact, earlier this year he was honored by Barry University with a Distinguished Alumni Award for his achievements, contributions to the community and support of the university. Prior to that, Nelson was inducted into the 2010 Miami Dade College Alumni Hall of Fame in the field of healthcare.
Before settling in the Coral Gables, Nelson worked three years as CEO of Baptist Health’s Mariners Hospital in Tavernier after serving in leadership capacities; chief operating officer for Parkway Regional Medical Center in North Miami Beach; senior vice president and CEO of McNeal Hospital in Berwyn, IL; CEO and regional director of operations for HealthSouth Corporation; director of regional operations for Phymatrix in Atlanta; vice president of healthcare services for the Coker Group in Atlanta; vice president of operations for United Medical Corporation in Orlando, and vice president of support services as well as associate administrator for Miami’s Mercy Hospital.
This man of many talents is a consummate professional generously giving time and serving on numerous boards of directors including the Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce, Coral Gables Community Foundation, City of Coral Gables Health Facility Authority, The Cuba Corps and also serves on the executive committee of the board of the Beacon Council, where he co-chairs the One Community One Goal program. Prior to this appointment, he served as chair of the program’s Life Sciences and Healthcare committee.
With seemingly boundless energy, Nelson Lazo also is a member of the Orange Bowl Committee and the American College of Healthcare Executives. He has served as chair of the board of the Health Council of South Florida Inc. and as president of the Key Largo Chamber of Commerce.
Nelson and his wife, Olga, reside in Coral Gables and have two grown children. When he is not enjoying time with family, working or volunteering, what little free time he has to good works. He enjoys fishing, boating and tennis.
