The National Bobblehead Hall of Fame and Museum recently unveiled a special edition University of Miami Sebastian the Ibis Centennial Bobblehead to celebrate the 100th birthday of the University of Miami.
The University of Miami was established in 1925 and the 100th birthday is being celebrated throughout 2025. The bobblehead features Miami’s beloved mascot on a base that has the special 100th birthday logo.
The bobblehead was unveiled in conjunction with College Colors Day, which is a national celebration observed on the Friday (Aug. 29 this year) before Labor Day, that encourages students, alumni, fans, and families to wear their college colors and apparel to showcase school spirit and celebrate higher education.
• The officially licensed, limited-edition bobbleheads are being produced by the National Bobblehead Hall of Fame and Museum, an official licensee of the University of Miami. Each bobblehead will be individually numbered to 2,025.
The bobbleheads, which are expected to ship in January, are $40 each plus a flat-rate shipping charge of $8 per order.
• Standing on a base that has the special University of Miami Centennial logo, the Sebastian the Ibis bobblehead features Miami’s beloved mascot giving the “U” hand symbol while wearing Miami’s orange football jersey.
• Folklore maintains that the Ibis is the last sign of wildlife to take shelter before a hurricane and the first to reappear after the storm. The local marsh bird was considered Miami’s first unofficial mascot when the school yearbook adopted the name Ibis in 1926. Its popularity grew among the students during the 1950s. In 1957, San Sebastian Hall, a residence hall on campus, sponsored an Ibis entry in the homecoming celebration. The next year, student John Stormont performed at games in an Ibis costume that was glued, sewn, and pinned together and was the forerunner of today’s bird. Through the years, Sebastian has become one of the most recognizable college mascots in the United States.
• According to the University of Miami’s Centennial website, “The University of Miami was established in 1925 as a private institution with a public mission: to transform the region and lives we touched.” In April, the University hosted a momentous birthday celebration, marking 100 years since the University’s charter date kicking off a year of celebration of the momentous anniversary.
• “We’re excited to unveil this special edition bobblehead celebrating the University of Miami’s centennial,” said Phil Sklar, National Bobblehead Hall of Fame and Museum co-founder and CEO. “This bobblehead will be a must have for Miami fans, alumni, students, faculty, and staff to celebrate the school’s historic birthday.”
• The National Bobblehead Hall of Fame and Museum, which is located at 170 S. First. St. in Milwaukee, WI, opened to the public on Feb. 1, 2019. The HOF and Museum also produces high quality, customized bobbleheads for retail sale as well as organizations, individuals, and teams across the country.
