Nicklaus Children’s pediatric experts are available to discuss the following topics during the month of February:

  • COVID-19

o   With the Omicron variant and flurona still affecting children in South Florida, experts can discuss numbers, what we are seeing, tips and more.

  • Congenital Heart Defects

o   In honor of American Heart Month, pediatric cardiologists are available to discuss congenital heart defects in children. Congenital heart defects affect 1 percent of children. Topic include but are not limited to:

  • Use of mixed reality (3D printing and virtual reality) to plan complex cases and provide patient education
  • New harmony valve offers pulmonary valve replacement via cardiac catheterization
  • Nicklaus Children’s fetal cardiology program helps parents expecting a baby identified with a heart disorder to prepare for the child’s care after birth.
  • Oral and Dental Hygiene

o   February is National Children’s Dental Health Month. Nicklaus Children’s pediatric dentists are ready to discuss oral and dental hygiene tips, basic care and more!

      • Though newborns and younger infants do not begin showing teeth until about six months, it is recommended they receive early dental care to monitor their progress.
      • According to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), dental caries is the most common chronic disease of childhood, with 59% of 12- to 19-year-olds having at least one documented cavity. Clinicians can share tips on how families can help children to develop healthy habits that will optimize oral health.

  • Eating Disorders

    • Nicklaus Children’s physicians highlight National Eating Disorders Awareness Week (February 21 – February 27) to educate the public about the realities of eating disorders and to provide hope, support, and visibility to individuals and families affected by eating disorders.
      • Experts available to discuss myths and misunderstandings that surround anorexia, bulimia, binge eating disorder and EDNOS.
      • “The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated the burden of eating disorders and simultaneously has highlighted the urgent need to raise awareness of these disorders. While the pandemic has impaired population mental health globally, it seems to have had particularly detrimental effects on people with or at risk of eating disorders.” *
