Planting orchids in the City Beautiful

Planting orchids in the City Beautiful

In 2014, the City of Coral Gables agreed to collaborate with Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden in the Million Orchid Project with the goal of reintroducing native orchids in the city’s lush canopy in the next five years.

Since the program began in 2016, city staff and Fairchild volunteers have planted on an average more than 14,000 orchids each year for a total of 43,140 orchids in the past three years.

The city recently extended the program for a new term of 10 years, the time necessary to plant 250,000 orchids that will make Coral Gables even more beautiful when the flowering plants are in full bloom.

Fairchild also is setting up a permanent orchid tent at the Farmers Market to give away up to 2,000 free orchids at each market to speed-up the distribution.
