For the first time during the past eight years under the direction of Coach Lynn Bryan, the Leonettes Dance Team from Ponce de Leon Middle School is requesting funds to cover the cost of costumes.
In prior years, the girls themselves or proceeds from team fundraisers have covered the many hundreds of dollars required annually to outfit each team member. As the program grows however the unit is performing much more often, and in front of larger audiences within the M-DCPS dance community and beyond.
As a result, the team finds it necessary to purchase additional, quality costumes. Not only will they use these particular costumes for competition, but also to enhance the International Baccalaureate Program, as the piece the team is using the costumes for is founded in traditional Punjab Indian dance, called Bhangra.
Finally, the costume designer worked closely with the Leonettes to create something to be used separately as well as combined with other items already in the wardrobe, providing more costumes for the many school performances, and while serving as ambassadors for Ponce de Leon Middle School.
