The Rotary Club of Coral Gables installed its new board of directors and officers on July 16 with a lovely dinner at Seasons 52 on Miracle Mile. Following a cocktail hour with flatbreads, and dinner, former District 6990 governor Drew Monaghan officiated over the installation of officers and board.
Taking over the gavel from 2024-25 president Jim Skinner is Greg Petrino who bring lots of new ideas for growth and service. Making the night even more special, Rotarian Lloyd Miller surprised Andrea, his wife of 49 years, with a Paul Harris Fellow.
Among the many enjoying the evening were past president Yolanda Woodbridge, who was instrumental in coordinating the affair; former Judge Maria Korvick; past RCCG president Carlos Bolado, with his wife, Terry; past president Felix Pardo with his wife, Lynn; past president Greg Martini with Lina Pinzon; past president Ana Gallagher; past president Nicolas Eterovic; past president Kelly Garces; past president Sally Baumgartner Goodman and husband, Larry; Christine Constantine; Sue Padalino; Bill and Chie Quesenberry; Anthony Poppe, and George Reeves and wife.
Rotarians recently enjoyed a program featuring Brian Galea, one of three co-founders of a non-profit organization, Heal 2 Heel Therapy Dogs (H2H). Brian, a resident expert trainer of H2H, and a Tester/Observer for Alliance of Therapy Dogs, brought his own therapy dog and two others with their owners, Mirna Leal and Nhora Murillas.
Brian, with his diverse background in science, research, and business and as a Certified Professional Trainer and Canine Behaviorist, was able to field many questions while the three dogs interacted with the crowd. His audience that day were as entertained with his talk as they were with the dogs: Mr. Gustaf, Pearl and Dash. In other service club news, the Coral Gables Woman’s Club (CGWC) had a very active July.
The club held two fundraising events after returning from a fundraising cruise where they had a day of service at an elementary school in Roatan, Honduras, orchestrated by Rita Tennyson.
Rita, owner of Birdie Bistro and R Catering, returned from that cruise for July 4 festivities at Birdie Bistro, that hosts the club’s monthly Gringo Bingo. On July 22, despite a torrential rainstorm, a sellout crowd at Gringo Bingo helped support the principal’s special fund at the Dr. Marvin Dunn Academy for Community Education (ACE). Three days later, a charity dinner celebrating Rita’s birthday was held at Birdie Bistro and helped CGWC raise dollars for two great charities, Voices for Children and The Women Voice Network.
Miami Postal Service Credit Union’s Byron Derricks and Rafael Barboza were recent guests on Gloria’ Gab LIVE discussing their services. Among the many benefits of belonging to a credit union is that credit unions all collaborate to serve their clients. If you need to cash or make a deposit in one credit union, you can go to whatever one is most convenient instead of where you have your account. MPSCU has branches in Doral, Pinecrest and Miami Gardens and, little known fact, you do not have to be a postal employee to take advantage of their services.
In other news, Fogo de Chao in Dadeland was a busy place for networking on July 24 with a luncheon for the Greater Kendall Business Association with Carlos Ribero followed by a mixer in the evening for Chamber South with Rick Alberti. Both events brought huge crowds. It seems everyone loves Fogo de Chao and what’s not to love.
