Running for commission seat in Group Four : Jackson “Rip” Holmes
Jackson “Rip” Holmes

Jackson “Rip” Holmes was born and raised in Coral Gables and has spent most of his life there.

He has a law degree from the University of Florida. He owns property in Downtown Gables, 10 retail stores located at 244-272 Miracle Mile. He also works as a real estate agent and previously has run for the Coral Gables City Commission. He speaks Spanish fluently and his wife is Peruvian.

“I am totally against the runaway development going on in Coral Gables, enabled by the U.S. Supreme Court decision in Citizens United, allowing unlimited developer PAC donations, such that:
• Developers donate more than four times as much to Coral Gables Commission campaigns than all taxpayers combined.
• As a result, we live in a developer-ocracy. We no longer live in a democracy.

I have a plan to slow this down, but let me assert, virtually all other candidates are receiving money from developers. Not me. Even assuming I lose, I submit we should not cave in to developers, and a protest vote for me sends developers a message —’We know what you are doing, and we don’t like it’.”

When asked what he would do in the first 100 days after being taking office he said, “If elected, my first 100 days will be devoted to:
1. Getting a referendum on the ballot doing what the City of Miami Beach and the City of Key Biscayne already have done. Namely, amend the city charter to require voter approval of all new proposed major developments in the city. See e.g. https://chng.it/LTJdZbXkB2
2. Addressing fire concerns as to manpower to care for the fact that, despite some 60 major new buildings since 1992, we still haven’t added a single firefighter in these same past 30 years.
3. Appoint slower development advocates to city boards.
4. Cut taxes on all but police, fire, and trash pickup.
5. Support Gables resident ID document.”
