Running for commission seat in Group Four : Melissa Castro
Melissa Castro

Melissa Castro is an expert in understanding why we behave the way we do. She has more than 12 years of experience and has been trained in the scientific processes of human and business behavior.

Castro’s excellent at figuring out solutions to problems by changing a few variables in the environment. She graduated from Florida International University and obtained a bachelor’s degree in Psychology, specializing in Applied Behavior Analysis. Several years later, she returned to graduate school and obtained a master’s in Industrial Organizational Psychology.

Castro always has had an inexplicable passion for humanity and her community. During the first decade of her career, she specialized in evidence-based interventions that focused on improving the overall quality of life for individuals, schools, and communities. She has a proven record for listening, analyzing, and delivering results. Melissa is a scientific, data-driven woman who stands up for what is right. Very experienced in listening and being the voice for others.

Sadly, in September 2020, her mother passed away. Then, Castro was forced to leave her career and take over her mom’s Permit Expediting Business. She has had great success during the time she began to manage M.E.D. Expediters. During this time, her involvement with the Coral Gables community grew and became a priority.

Now Castro sees a need to contribute to a bigger change that needs to happen in her community of Coral Gables.

When asked what she would do in the first 100 days after being taking office she said, “In the first 100 days after taking office, I plan to:
• Prioritize residents and be their voice while supporting more resident engagement and involvement.
• Support cameras in the Downtown area and certain streets in North Gables while conducting neighborhood crime watches and/or support the commission with strategies of reinforcement schedules for the residents.
• Support plans and/or strategies that incorporate more parking.
• Support small businesses and residents with step-by-step instructions on how to apply for a permit and what to expect. Combined with videos on the Coral Gables website.
• Reanalyzing schedules of reinforcement (Crime, Safety, Permitting, and Traffic Violations) that increase the likelihood of desired behaviors.
• Advocate state and federal funds for plans to change septic tanks onto our sewer system. I propose to begin this change in phases and oppose raising property taxes.
• Preserve the historic nature of our city and the essence of what makes it so special.
• Create a program that prioritizes residential permitting —“Residents First.”
• Bring awareness to available residential permitting programs to streamline the permitting process. (Silver Permit Program and Mobile permitting.)
• Synchronized lights would help traffic and enhance illumination on dark streets.
• “Service above Self” — providing residents access to me with open office hours.
• Further, implement the 3 R’s in schools: Reuse, Reduce, and Recycle.”
