A NEWS RELEASE FROM SCHOOL BOARD MEMBER ROBERTO J. ALONSO, DISTRICT 4
The Miami Dade College (MDC) Board of Trustees unanimously elected Mr. Roberto J. Alonso as Vice Chair during its regular meeting held on Tuesday. The appointment reflects the Board’s strong confidence in his leadership, vision, and steadfast dedication to MDC’s mission of expanding access to high-quality, affordable education.
A proud graduate of MDC, Mr. Alonso shares a deep personal connection to the institution. He and his two sisters, now both teachers in Miami-Dade County Public Schools, are living proof of how the College has opened doors for generations of local families. As a School Board Member and MDC Trustee, Mr. Alonso is committed to bridging the gap between K–12 and higher education, helping students in our public schools find clear pathways to college and successful careers.
“MDC changed the trajectory of my life and my family’s life. I am honored to serve in this role and remain focused on expanding the same opportunities for all students across our community,” said Alonso. “This moment is especially meaningful as our community prepares to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the historic Freedom Tower, where my parents and grandparents were welcomed into this country. It is a privilege to serve MDC as we honor this symbol of freedom, resilience, and hope.”
Mr. Alonso has served with distinction on the Board of Trustees, consistently advocating for student achievement, workforce readiness, and community engagement. His election as Vice Chair underscores the Board’s commitment to strong, community-centered leadership and highlights MDC’s enduring role as a national model for access, innovation, and opportunity in education.
