School days are here and fall events crowd calendar

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

The hot days of summer are hopefully almost over and lots of fundraisers and activities are coming our way. As Miami Dade County schools’ classes are now in session, efforts to make sure all children have the supplies needed prior to the start of the year were impressive. A Back-to-School Health Fair held at Charles Hadley Park on Saturday, July 29, was a great chance for hundreds of youngsters to get immunizations, health checkups, educational materials and more. The Rotary Club of Coral Gables (RCCG) was on hand with a dozen or so volunteers to give away 312 back packs loaded with supplies and assist with other services provided by Angie Dawkins’ Organization. Among the many volunteers with this writer watching the grateful faces of the kids that day were RCCG’s Frank Sexton, Dr. Phil Boswell, Bruce Kerestes, Greg Martini, Sally Baumgartner, Yoli Woodbridge, Dipak Joshi, Hadley and Jennifer Williams, Yasi Orozco, Bill Quesenberry and fiancée Chie.

Gables Rotarian and Sr. Vice President of Marketing & Communications for South Florida PBS, Jeneissy Azcuy, was also there with her SFPBS cohorts Anabel Cardenas and Victoria Gallo to hand out resource materials. As a special treat, they brought along one of their Kids Vision characters, Xavier Riddle, as well as Miss Penny to the delight of the little ones who love her shows.

Teachers and supporters of the Dr. Marvin Dunn Academy for Community Education (ACE) were treated to an annual end of summer breakfast hosted by long-time benefactors, Lynn Bauer and Dr. Hal Wanless. ACE, once located in Coral Gables, was moved to El Portal many years ago but donors who supported them in the Gables continued support for the school that gets overlooked by organizations doing school supply drives. During the event, Hal asked the teachers to fill out a wish list for their classrooms while Lynn collected checks from several guests for Principal Dr. Deborah Carter’s special fund. An especially popular figure at the Denny’s breakfast was Dr. Jose Chaviano, a dentist who has provided lots of free dental services for students and even some teachers. Thanks to the collection at the breakfast and proceeds from the Coral Gables Woman’s Club’s Gringo Bingo the following day., ACE will get yet another check to help grant those wishes as proceeds from the August 15 event at Clutch Burger is being shared between ACE and Tucker Elementary. Among the many enjoying the breakfast that morning were Mayra and Carlos Rossi, Rita and Saesha Tennyson, Ruth Martinez, Hank Langston, and Luis Valenzuela, to mention a few.

Speaking of Luis Valenzuela, exciting news is coming soon. Luis is bringing to Miami a historic shoe museum. He is curating and has already collected hundreds of shoes, some centuries old, that will certainly be a great attraction for locals and tourists alike. More on that in months to come.

In other news, the Coral Gables Chamber was busier than ever this summer with its annual conference presented by Doctors Hospital coming up on August 24, at The Biltmore Hotel.

The conference started with its 15th Annual George E. Merrick Awards of Excellence Dinner honoring Sheldon Anderson with a full day on Friday kicking off with Breakfast Sponsored by Amerant Bank and featuring Scott Jeffrey Miller, Best Selling Author, Radio & Podcast Host, Coach, Columnist, and Global Keynote Speaker. Prior to that on July28, Coral Gables Chamber Trustees & GEM Investors also gathered at The Biltmore to enjoy an exquisite wine pairings luncheon held at The Biltmore prepared especially for them by Executive Chef Thomas Russo on July 28th. Preceded by a board of directors meeting before the lunch, many had a brief opportunity to visit Mark Trowbridge who is still undergoing treatments and has a great staff, called Team Mark, filling in beautifully under his direction from afar.

Finally, save these dates for fall events:
September 15, CGWC’s Gringo Bingo, 7 p.m., at Clutch Burger for NAAF; September 30, King Mango Strut Parage unveiling of theme; September 30, 2-5 p.m., The Miami Woman’s Club Fashion Show; September 30 – National Day Service; October 28, A Safe Haven for Newborns Gala; and October 28, Magic Waste Foundation Gala, and that is just a few of the events coming up soon.

Until next time, share your talents, make a difference and be kind!
