Service club’s outreach extends beyond our borders

Our South Florida service clubs are amazing at supporting local programs and initiatives as well as those beyond our borders.

At the end of March, members of the Rotary Club of Coral Gables (RCCG) returned from a mission to Santo Domingo, capital of the Dominican Republic. The trip was led by the club’s International Committee chair Carol Brock, who was accompanied by several committee members including Yolanda Woodbridge; Bill Quesenberry and wife, Chie, and Jennifer Kyla.

Aside from delivering school supplies to children, this trip also served to check on the projects the club’s foundation has been supporting at the Alfalit preschools in that country.

Rotarians involved in the visit felt blessed to meet the children who were most grateful and excited to receive the supplies and meet everyone. This is one of the Rotary Club of Coral Gables’ many international outreach efforts that help support worthy projects and programs year after year.

Of course, Rotary International’s Polio Plus program is responsible for almost eradicating polio worldwide.

At home, our service clubs have had an active month. The GFWC (General Federation of Women’s Clubs) Coco Plum Woman’s Club recently helped with an Honor Flight out of Fort Lauderdale airport. These Honor Flights are conducted every year taking veterans to Washington, DC, where they visit Arlington Cemetery to pay respect and remember old comrades in arms.

Participating in the effort were Yolanda Woodbridge, Sue Nichols, Sandra Williamson, Sara Warren, Kim Schain, and Joyce Windhorst.

In other GFWC club activity, with Mother’s Day coming soon, the Coral Gables Woman’s Club is planning a mini fundraiser leading up to its annual Mother’s Day Tea to benefit the club’s free children’s dental clinic.

On May 3, 11 a.m.-1 p.m., Kendra Scott in Dadeland Mall is hosting a Sip and Shop for Mother’s Day with 20 percent of the sales to benefit the clinic. Then on May 10, the club will hold its annual Mother’s Day Tea, titled “Passage to India.”

This event is always a great way to get together with friends and family to celebrate moms and those who are much loved. Come in costume if you like and plan on lots of great photo ops, a fabulous silent auction, music, entertainment, food and more.

For tickets go to Eventbrite or gfwccoralgableswomansclub.org.

By the way, there still is time to sign up for CGWC’s June 28 cruise to also support the club’s free children dental clinic.

On the sports scene, the Miami Marlins vs. the New York Mets game on Apr. 1 served to support the second annual “One Day for Jackson,” an annual day of giving for the Foundation. The Marlins won the game topping off a great day that was enjoyed by several who have been treated at Jackson.

Among the special guests was Brianna Denny whose life was saved at Jackson. Brianna, a “One Day for Jackson” Miracle Story, threw the first pitch while Mario Ramil, local comedian and a Jackson Health Foundation supporter, provided entertainment with his beautiful family including his toddler who danced with the mascots and stole the show.

Flavia Llizo, CEO of the Jackson Health Foundation, spoke of the importance of Jackson Health, Miami’s safety net hospital system. Flavia noted that 100 percent of funds raised during this campaign will go toward supporting Jackson’s mission of providing a single, high standard of quality care for the residents of Miami-Dade, regardless of their ability to pay.

On the entertainment front, Senora Martinez, Chef Michelle Bernstein’s new restaurant, hosted a lovely reception and preview of her show, Check, Please! South Florida, on South Florida PBS. This show gives amateur foodies the opportunity to review, rate and celebrate their favorite local restaurants.

Chef Michelle’s loyal fans attending the Apr. 7 preview showing were able to enjoy some of the most delicious hors d’oeuvres ever with drinks before getting to see the first show of the season followed by a Q & A with Michelle. The menu at Senora Martinez, located at 2325 Galiano in Coral Gables, is “rooted in Spain with influences and flavors from France, the Mediterranean and Old-World culinary traditions” and promises to be one you will want to experience again and again.

Among the guests enjoying the evening with this writer were former Coral Gables Mayor Don Slesnick, SFLPBS semior vice president of Marketing & Communications Jeneissy Azcuy, Dr. Jeffrey Soloman, Patty Villa, Michael Kavulich, and Jerry Kavulich.
