According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, one in every five children under the age of 14 killed in traffic crashes was a pedestrian.
To improve pedestrian safety in Coral Gables, the city commission appropriated $300,000 to re-stripe crosswalks throughout the city over a period of two years. Beginning this year, the City of Coral Gables will stripe high visibility crosswalks and install over 200 optional temporary in-ground pedestrian paddles to educate motorists and bicyclists that the state law requires them to stop for people walking in crosswalks.
In addition to re-striping existing crosswalks, the city will be striping new crosswalks in 46 locations. These locations were selected based on their proximity to schools, city facilities and churches.
