The students of Somerset Academy Gables public charter school in Coral Gables performed an act of kindness to help children in need during November by donating more than 75 books to Miami Children’s Hospital’s Michael Fux Family Center Library.

Five Somerset students from grades Pre-K-3 to Second Grade were selected by their peers to make the donation in person following a book drive held by the school throughout a week in September.

The participating students, who were chosen to make the official donation based on being named the “kindest and most helpful” in their classrooms, enjoyed a tour of the facility and library, and learned about the importance of helping the children in their community.

The books, which were donated generously by parents and students of Somerset Gables, included Fancy Nancy, Goodnight Moon, Clifford and Nursery Rhymes, among others.

“It is very important for us to teach children about helping others,” said Suzette Ruiz, principal of Somerset Academy Gables. “There is a strong message in providing children with the gift of reading, and our school is very proud to have contributed to giving back to our community.”

The Miami Children’s Hospital’s Michael Fux Family Center, which opened in October 2009, makes families feel more at home while their children are hospitalized. The 4,560-square-foot facility provides basic comforts such as showers and laundry facilities, to stress relievers including a small workout gym and massage room, a movie theater, children’s library and family entertainment facilities.
