The wonderful story of the wooden puppet that turns into a “real boy” is presented live by the Area Stage Company, Feb. 17-26, at the historic Riviera Theatre, 1560 S. Dixie Hwy. in Coral Gables.
This new and enchanting musical, My Son Pinocchio Jr., which retells the classic Disney story of Pinocchio from Geppetto’s perspective, features the beloved classic songs such as When You Wish upon a Star and I’ve Got No Strings, alongside a host of new songs by Oscar winner and Grammy Award winner Stephen Schwartz, who also composed music for other well-known titles such as Children of Eden, Godspell, and Wicked.
Join the Blue Fairy, Stromboli and a lively cast of characters as Geppetto journeys beyond the toyshop to discover the true meaning of family. When the Blue Fairy grants Geppetto’s wish to bring his beloved puppet to life, the new father quickly learns that being a parent is full of chal- lenges.
The Blue Fairy is convinced that she granted Geppetto’s wish perfectly, but the toy maker is less than thrilled with his new son, Pinocchio.
He struggles to make his son “the perfect boy,” only to lose him to a gang of Roustabouts. It is only when faced with the thought of never seeing Pinocchio again that Geppetto truly learns the joys of being a father and loving his child unconditionally.
The show’s music and lyrics are by Stephen Schwartz, book by David Stern, direction and production design by Giancarlo Rodaz, musical direction by Priscilla Blanco. Kenya Anthony-Moore is production stage manager.
Performances are Opening Night, Feb. 17, at 7:30 p.m.; Fridays at 7:30 p.m.; Saturdays at 2 and 7 p.m., and Sundays at 5 p.m.
