There was a big wave of pink during October at St. Theresa Catholic School in support of breast cancer awareness month.

Spearheaded by Anabelle Cejas, seventh grade student at STS, in memory of her grandmother, Ana Montoya, the student council put together a community service project to support La Liga Contra el Cancer, a community-based voluntary health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem.

“Pink T-shirts were sold at the beginning of October to students, faculty, parents and grandparents,” said Cristina Guanche-Martinez, STS director of Curriculum and Student Council Moderator. “All of this was a result of a proposal presented to our principal, Sister Rosalie Nagy, OCD, by Anabelle Cejas.”

Breast cancer impacted the lives of the Cejas family.

“When I was pregnant with Anabelle, her grandmother contracted breast cancer and passed away,” Monica Cejas explained. “We support the fight against breast cancer and pray for a cure.”

Adriana Cora, volunteer executive vice president of La Liga and breast cancer survivor, was on hand to accept the $3,000 donation from STS.

“Early detection is key,” Cora said. “Mammograms are essential as we fight for a cure. We are so very grateful for this donation, as it will help save lives, celebrate lives, and lead the fight for a world without cancer.”
