Coral Gables High senior Katrina Darby is an artist. Over the past year she has focused on realistic drawings.
“Drawing landscapes, people… practicing my anatomy,” Darby said. “And have my mind expanded to create more creative pieces.”
She tries to draw almost every day.
“I do a lot of art related things in my free time and I take a lot of art classes,” she said. “I’ve been taking art every year.”
She draws by hand as well as on the computer.
“When I draw on paper, it’s not that different than when I draw on computer,” she said. “The only difference is the coloring and shading.”
Since art is such a big part of her life, any community service project she does has to have an art component. Over the summer, Darby was working on developing a project with a couple of friends. Plans called for conducting an art supply drive and working on art with kids at an orphanage.
In college, Darby plans to study animation.
“I hope to go to Sheridan College,” she said. “My second choice is the Savannah College of Art and Design.”
A third possibility is the Ringling College of Art and Design in Sarasota.
At Gables, Darby was involved in a club called Health Corps. She loved being a part of the group and learning how to take on a leadership role. She liked helping people change their health habits for the better.
This year, Darby is an officer in the National Honor Society.
“I help make the shirts for the club and help check on the points for the members at the meetings,” she said.
She also is secretary of the Art Club.
Darby is a volunteer in a pre-school program at a church.
“I get the kids motivated to listen to the lesson and help them behave,” she said. “I’m an assistant to the teacher.”
