Carrollton School of the Sacred Heart senior MariVi Madiedo plans to help fellow students with the Shape Thy Selfie campaign, which is an offshoot of the Respect Thy Selfie program that started last year through the Campus Ministry.
“Since I’m from a Catholic school, we believe in the nourishment of mind, body and soul,” she said.
The Shape Thy Selfie campaign intends to teach girls to have confidence in themselves. One way to achieve that goal is to come together as a group and go on runs together.
“I’m a cross country runner; it’s a way to relieve stress,” Madiedo said. “Different people who are stressed in their own way come together in an activity that can help them feel better.”
Students who aren’t experienced runners will be able to participate.
“We will walk and run and build up the activity,” Madiedo said.
She said she expects more than 20 girls to participate in the first event.
Along with Campus Ministry, Madiedo is a member of Rebuilding Miami. That group organizes events one or two weekends a year. The volunteers come together to repair and repaint homes.
She also is a member of Habitat for Humanity. Earlier this year she and seven other girls worked three weekends on building a house. The rest of the year the girls fundraise at school to help fund the housing program.
Madiedo is on both the cross country and track and field teams. She ranks in the top 25 in the state in cross country, and in track she made it to state three years in a row.
Until recently she planned on attending the University of Miami but now she is looking to go to New York University instead. Her goal is to double major in English and art.
“I want to be an editor for a publishing company and maybe go into graphic design as well,” she said.
