Student Spotlight Olga Herrera

OLGA HERRERA

Coral Gables High senior Olga Herrera is very involved in extracurricular activities. She’s vice president of the Interact service club.

“As vice president I lead others by telling them the dates that events happen,” she said.

She also is in charge of planning activities for the month of October, which is filled with events in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness month.

Herrera said one of the big events will be the Susan G. Koman Walk in Downtown Miami, but they also are planning a week of events at school leading up to the walk.

Those events include placing posters throughout the school for students to write inspiring messages to women who have suffered from breast cancer. The posters will be distributed to hospitals. They also will distribute pink ribbons for students to wear and they will hand out information about breast cancer, treatment and prevention.

During that week, students will be urged to wear pink on Pink Day to support family and friends who have suffered from the disease that mainly attacks women.

While Herrera is very involved in Interact, she also is involved in the National Honor Society. She is working hard to maintain her grade point average and follow the NHS guidelines so she can be an honors graduate.

Her other big commitment is to the yearbook.

“It’s my second year on the yearbook. I’m a senior editor,” Herrera said. “My duty basically is to take care of the senior class.”

She gets senior quotes, deals with senior pictures and laying out the senior pages. She also is in the Quill and Scroll journalism honor society because of her work on the yearbook.

Her career goal is to become a registered nurse. She hopes to attend either the University of Miami or Miami-Dade College and then transferring to a fouryear school.
