The Shir Ami Religious School at Temple Judea in Coral Gables recently celebrated Passover by making and giving matzah covers.
Teacher Ken Levy’s second grade class hand-decorated matzah covers for residents at The Palace in Kendall and delivered them on Friday, Mar. 30. Matzah, or unleavened bread, is eaten during the eight days of Passover to commemorate the time when the Jewish people were exiled into the desert from Egypt and had no time to wait for their bread to rise.
The children and their parents were invited to share Shabbat services (led by Levy, who has been leading Shabbat services at The Palace for several years). The children presented the residents with the handmade matzah covers. Nearly every child in the class turned out (this was entirely voluntary).
One by one, each child presented his/her matzah cover to a delighted resident. The residents’ joy was visible and their gratitude immeasurable. Equally important, the children gained a deeper understanding of what a mitzvah (a good deed) really is.
