Palmer Trinity incoming senior Amanda Martin is passionate about computer coding, cosmetics, fashion and the law.
Last summer, she was able to combine a couple of those interests in a fashion show that was part of the six weeks of Flatiron programming courses she took at Palmer Trinity.
“I learned how to program computers,” she said. “The final week I took a class that taught social entrepreneurship.”
For the class, she and a team designed and made tee shirts with a variety of sayings on them.
“We had different styles — long sleeves, short sleeves; we had crop tops, and we had tank tops too,” Martin said. “That way everybody can feel beautiful.”
At the end of the week they had a fashion show and sold the shirts to classmates, family and friends.
She continued learning coding by taking a computer program class at Miami-Dade College this summer. She also is co-president of the Palmer Coding Club with Charles Bailey.
And she started the Self-EsTEEm club at school, turning the Flatiron company into a club.
“We talk about projects that we are going to do,” she said. “We try to find local organizations that help women.”
Martin is president of Model United Nations, which is new at Palmer. Her goal is to have the club participate in competitions.
Cheering is another one of her activities. This is her ninth year of cheering, her seventh at Palmer Trinity.
She is a copy editor of the Palmer Trinity literary magazine and has published a short story and poem in the magazine.
She is in a Parsons Teen Vogue Certificate program and has completed a course at the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising in California.
“I did their three days of fashion program,” she said.
Martin is particularly interested in protecting designers’ ideas.
Eventually Martin hopes to combine computer programing, her passion for fashion and cosmetic and the law to empower women.
