The Subaru Legacy has been re-designed for 2015 and follows the design themes introduced in the concept model at the 2013 Los Angeles Auto Show.
The new Legacy has a footprint similar to the model it replaces, yet has more interior room and a bigger trunk. It is the bestequipped Legacy ever offered, with all trim lines adding new standard amenities and the Limited trims offering the highest level of luxury in this model.
The new Legacy’s design delivers a 10-percent improvement in aerodynamic efficiency. It has a sporty, coupe-like profile and a new front fascia that combines the hexagonal grille and bumper into one smooth piece. An aluminum hood reduces weight over the front wheels to enhance steering response and the windshield is more raked. A new standard Active Grille Shutter system helps to improve fuel economy by reducing wind resistance when closed.
In the Legacy 3.6R Limited, new standard HID low-beam headlights give the car a more distinctive nighttime signature. The U-shape taillights and brake lights on all models use LED bulbs for lower power consumption and a luxurious appearance. Limited trims feature turn signal exterior mirrors.
The new Legacy also continues to emphasize safety with the introduction of the latest version of the EyeSight system and a new available Rear Vehicle Detection System that includes Blind Spot Detection, Lane Change Assist and Rear Cross Traffic Alert. A standard rear-view camera is now located closer to the center of the car for more natural imaging, while a new rollover sensor can deploy the side curtain airbags if an imminent rollover is detected. The 2015 Subaru Legacy also has a new type of airbag restraint and a new available rear radar system. The new front seat-cushion airbags help keep occupants in place in a frontal collision.
For added nighttime security, the 2015 Legacy has new standard Welcome Lighting that automatically turns on cabin illumination and exterior lights as the driver approaches or departs the car. Limited trims offer a Keyless Access & Start system as well as PIN Code Access. The new system allows the driver to leave the keys in the Legacy, lock it and then unlock the car using the PIN Code — ideal while running, swimming and other activities where carrying keys is not convenient or secure.
As for power, there’s a choice of fourcylinder and six-cylinder BOXER engines mated to a standard Lineartronic CVT (continuously variable transmission). Fuel economy is rated at 26 mpg city/36 mpg highway/ 30 mpg combined. The six-cylinder powered 3.6R Limited also has 10 percent better fuel economy with estimated ratings of 20/29/23 mpg.
The MSRP on the Subaru Legacy ranges from $22,490 to $33,390.
