Summertime and the living is easy, but busy

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

Summertime and the living is easy…don’t you love that song? Summers used to be a time to take off, slow down a bit and have fun. They are still fun, but things have never been busier.

Take, for example, this past month or so. The Magic Waste Youth Foundation (MWYF) supporters gathered for a lovely reception at the Well Groomed Gentleman on July 18. Its founder, Rudy Bustamante, owner and CEO of Magic Waste Management, gathered friends, board members, and volunteers to promote this all-volunteer, 501(c)(3) nonprofit that helps former foster youth people reach their full potential, making the impossible possible.

Among the many enjoying the evening were host Al Maulini, Rick Alberty, Rudy’s son Diego Bustamante, Lynn Bauer, Dr. Hal Wanless, Myra Vide Rossi, Carlos Rossi, Dr. Jose Chaviano, Olga Salas-Olivera, Vanesa Montero and Olga Olivera. MWYF is a great organization that is helping fill an enormous need as foster kids age out and are left without a net. For more information on the Foundation, visit www.mwyfoundation.org.

Yet another great organization busy this summer is the Coral Gables Woman’s Club. They are planning an Aug. 15 Gringo Bingo to be hosted by restaurant owner Steve Bradley at Clutch Burger. This time, proceeds will benefit Tucker Elementary and the Dr. Marvin Dunn Academy Community Education (ACE Academy). Several sponsors already have signed to insure a successful night including Lynn Bauer, Hal Wanless, Mayra and Carlos Rossi, Jerry Kavulich, EZ Title Services (Liz Gamez), and 1st Empire Elite Financial (Frank Vazquez).

In other news, Book & Books hosted the July 14 Coral Gables Chamber Business Book Club, sponsored by First Citizens Bank. The event featured popular syndicated columnist, veteran TV and radio commentator, and author, Cal Thomas. Book club chair and chamber chair-elect Sara Hernandez introduced Thomas who discussed his book, A Watchman in the Night, and thoroughly entertained his captive audience followed by a Q&A and book signing.

Coral Gables Chamber seems to have two or three events a day for the members offering numerous educational activities and networkers. In fact, trustees and GEM investors recently enjoyed a beautiful evening at the Allen Morris Company attended by such notables as trustee chair Mitchell Mandler, Nguyen Cabanilla, Thad Adams, Ron Shuffield, Ody and Kenny Lugo, Rene Negron, Monique Selman, Lisa Albizu Vazquez and dozens more.

In addition, on July 12, the monthly Reconnect Luncheon was held at Morton’s featuring a presentation by Ser & Associates partner Zach Evangelista. The chamber is truly a great value for members with a monthly breakfast meeting the third Thursday of the month at The Biltmore Hotel and coming up the end of the annual two-day conference. On the sports front, the Miami Touchdown Club members and guests gathered on July 19 to present the organization’s Scholar Athlete and 2023 National Football Foundation (NFF) Team of Distinction Award during a luncheon at Duffy’s Sports Grill in Kendall.

The honors went to Westland Hialeah High School quarterback Max Lawrence, who accepted the award with his family in attendance. Max has an impressive resume having earned a Bright Futures Scholarship; being on the Presidential Honor Roll, graduating in the top 20 percent of his class, and serving as president of the Mission Possible Club. Look for Max on the UM field as a Miami Hurricane where he will begin studies this fall.

Among the many notables at the luncheon honoring this fine young man was Holmes Braddock (one of the founders of the club that was started in 1959). Miami Touchdown Club’s volunteer executive director, John Steinbauer, and the club’s vice president of programming, Stony Stonebraker, were recent guests on my Gloria’s Gab LIVE show to talk about Max, the club’s mission, membership and future events.

Any person who loves sports is invited to join the Miami Touchdown Club. Membership also includes membership in the National Football Association giving members the ability to vote on the Hall of Fame inductees every year.

For more information, go to www.MiamiTouchdownClub.com or contact Jeff Schneider at 954-294-4868.

Finally, Actors’ Playhouse is closing its 35th anniversary season with the United States premiere of Defending the Cavewoman by special license from Theater Mogul and GFour Productions. Defending the Cavewoman story, created by Emma Peirson and Vanessa Frost and written by Emma Peirson, has become a worldwide hit attracting great audiences and receiving critical acclaim in Europe. Now this one-woman show, starring award-winning actress Lindsey Corey, is at Actors’ Playhouse for all to enjoy through Aug. 6. For tickets, go to www.actorsplayhouse.org.

Until next time, share your talents, count your blessings and not your challenges and make a difference.
