The University of Florida School of Music in collaboration with the New World School of Arts (NWSA) presents the 2018 Brazilian Music Institute (BMI) from Monday, May 14 through Saturday, May 19 as part of the Consulate General of Brazil in Miami’s Cultural Season “A Journey through Brazilian Experiences.”
BMI brings together outstanding artists for a weeklong event designed to extend the experience and expand the possibilities of learning and performing Brazilian music.
The institute will present a closing concert titled “Terra Brasilis: From Choro to Jazz” on Saturday, May 19 at 7:30 p.m. at Miami Dade College’s Wolfson Campus Auditorium (room 1261), 300 NE 2nd Ave., Miami, FL 33132. Founded and organized by UF professor Welson Tremura in 2001, BMI is a training ground for Brazilian music. Through daily rehearsals and group lessons in Brazilian music with guest artists, BMI offers a challenging and exciting atmosphere in addition to an aesthetically and socially rewarding activity for all participants. The Brazilian Music Institute is a genuine Brazilian musical experience in the United States.
Community members and NWSA and UF students are invited to participate in the weeklong workshops. The cost for community members is $200. Current NWSA students can participate for free, and UF students can register for academic course credit.
This year’s guest artists and clinicians include Hercules Gomes (piano), Nestor Torres (flute), Brazilian Voices (vocal ensemble), Larry Crook (percussion), Vadim Arsky (saxophone), Aaron Colverson (Violin), Trabajara Belo (Guitar/Mandolin), Jim Gasior (piano), Beatriz Malnic (voice) and Welson Tremura (voice/guitar).
