One of my patients recently asked what she could do to minimize the wrinkles around her mouth—adding that she doesn’t even smoke! While smoking can certainly accelerate the formation of wrinkles, it’s not the only factor. And ridding wrinkles around the mouth often involves a combination of lifestyle changes, skincare routines, and professional treatments. Here are some of the most effective methods to keep your skin looking youthful and smooth.

Frist, stop smoking! Or at least cut down because smoking can in fact damage the skin around your mouth in many ways:

  • Wrinkles – Smoking can cause premature wrinkles around the mouth, including vertical wrinkles from pursing your lips around a cigarette.
  • Sagging – Smoking can cause the skin around your mouth to sag due to a loss of collagen and elastin, which are proteins that help maintain skin’s elasticity.
  • Smoker’s pucker – Smoking can cause dynamic wrinkles around the lips due to the use of certain muscles around the lips.
  • Premature aging – Smoking can cause premature aging of the skin, making it appear gray and dull.

So, let’s consider some of the best ways to maintain a youthful and smooth complexion.

Skincare Routines

The foundation of any wrinkle-reducing regimen starts with proper skincare. Moisturizing regularly is essential. Look for moisturizers that contain ingredients like hyaluronic acid, which helps retain moisture and keep the skin plump. Daily application of sunscreen is equally crucial; UV rays can accelerate skin aging and make wrinkles more pronounced. Using products containing retinoids, such as retinol or prescription-strength tretinoin, can boost cell turnover and help reduce the appearance of fine lines over time. Incorporating serums or creams rich in antioxidants like Vitamin C can also aid in skin repair and further diminish the appearance of wrinkles.

Lifestyle Changes

Simple lifestyle changes can have a significant impact on the health and appearance of your skin. Staying hydrated by drinking plenty of water keeps your skin supple and prevents dryness, which can make wrinkles more noticeable. A balanced diet rich in vitamins and minerals, particularly Vitamins A, C, and E, can promote skin health and resilience. And, of course, avoiding smoking is critical. Smoking not only contributes to wrinkles around the mouth through repetitive muscle movements but also reduces blood flow to the skin, accelerating the aging process.

Professional Treatments

For those seeking more immediate or advanced results, professional treatments can be highly effective. Botox injections, for example, can relax the muscles around the mouth, reducing the appearance of dynamic wrinkles. This must be administered by a qualified physician with a deep understanding of facial anatomy, as the mouth area is particularly delicate. Hyaluronic acid fillers are another option; they can plump up the skin, smoothing out wrinkles without creating an unnatural appearance. When performed properly, there’s no need to fear the dreaded “duck lips.”

Other professional treatments include laser resurfacing, which promotes collagen production and smooths out the skin, as well as microneedling and chemical peels. These treatments stimulate collagen production and improve overall skin texture by encouraging new skin growth.

Combining a tailored skincare routine, healthy lifestyle habits, and professional treatments can yield natural-looking results. Whether you’re looking to maintain your youthful glow or reduce the appearance of wrinkles, there are options available that can work for you. Consult with a qualified professional to determine the best plan for your needs.
