Coral Gables Woman’s Club’s conducted its spring new member installation on May 7.
Second vice president Kristina Jackson, the club’s membership chair, was assisted by club president Arely Ruiz in conducting the ceremony that included candles and gifts for all. The 11 new members installed were Yolanda L. Gonzalez, Joyce Stokes, Joelle Saliba, Lina Pinzon, Nadya Gribanova, Irene Martinez, Lee Harper, Julie Fowler, Cristina O Alvarez, Roxy Collazo and Helen Tarbutt. This club is part of the General Federation of Women’s Club’s District 11 whose director, Dr. Ruth Martinez, has been kept very busy with club events as a leader and volunteer having served as president of the Coral Gables Woman’s Club before moving on to District 11 director position.
Martinez also was one of many volunteers at the May 17 Coral Gables Literacy Fair at the Coral Gables Library that attracted hundreds of families. The City of Coral Gables began the day in honor of former commissioner and civic leader Jeannett Slesnick with the inauguration of Literacy Row. Attendees enjoyed a day that offered entertainment, food, educational handouts and more. This annual fair aims to encourage children to read, especially during the summer when students are on vacation.
Several local organizations and businesses were there to hand out promotional items of educational materials including the Rotary Club of Coral Gables which gave away children’s books; the Coral Gables Woman’s Club whose members brought information on the club’s free children’s dental clinic; Coral Gables Crime Watch, and more.
Among the many volunteers at the fair were Rotarians Sally Baumgartner, Yoli Woodbridge, Dipak Joshi, Carol Brock, and Dr. Phil Boswell with members from the Coral Gables Interact Club — Coral Gables Woman’s Club members Nancy Desmangles, Meredeth McKissick, Ruth Martinez and Ana Lam (also representing Crime Watch).
Actors’ Playhouse at the Miracle Theatre’s new play, A Girl on a Train, brought a standing ovation on opening night. This thriller was adapted from a Paula Hawkins’ best-selling novel and is one you will not want to miss. The cast is super and the story keeps you guessing throughout until the very end. Kudos to artistic director, David Arisco, whose direction is ingenious. The play runs through June 8. For tickets, visit https://actorsplayhouse.org/shows/the-girl-on-the-train/.
On the business scene, a super networker event was held May 13 at La Cañita at The Palms atTown and Country. Members of Coral Gables Chamber, Greater Kendall Business Association, Chamber South, Profit Inc. and BNI convened for a beautiful evening with live music, great hors d’oeuvres and a selection of drinks including margaritas, mojitos and more.
Among the many faces there were conveners Carlos Ribero and Rick Alberti, Karen Rodman, Carmen Siman, Maria and Don Van Orsdel, Mike Sutta, Yolanda Gonzalez, Lillian Ser, Lawanda Loftus, Stephen O. Wright, Giancarlo Ramirez, and Jerry Kavulich.
Finally, A Safe Haven for Newborns’ annual golf tournament took place at the Trump National Resort on May 16, attracting a full field of players for a fun filled day of golf, food trucks, drinks carts followed by a barbecue awards dinner. On hand to welcome everyone was ASHFN’s CEO and founder Nick Silverio.
