The Venetian Aquatic Club (VAC) was honored with a proclamation signed by Mayor Jim Cason at the City of Coral Gables Commission meeting on Tuesday, Mar. 10. The proclamation for “Venetian Aquatic Club Day” recognized the group for its 55 years of service to the community.
The Venetian Aquatic Club is a non-profit organization dedicated to teaching children and adults Red Cross Swimming lessons at the beautiful, historic Coral Gables Venetian Pool.
The Venetian Aquatic Club was formed in 1959 by a group of women who were concerned with the safety of the residents in the area. The many waterways, lakes, rockpits, pools and ocean itself, combined with the warm climate, made water safety of particular concern.
During the presentation, VAC president Keile Allen read a small excerpt, “‘Our club has grown to 100 strong and has become the leader of all Dade County aquatic clubs. I don’t think there is any doubt that we are here to stay. You’ve all got what it takes and the horizons are limitless.’ These words were written 55 years ago by the first Venetian Aquatic Club president Donna Perry.”
