Colonel Gary West, who served in the USAF for 26 years and commanded at the squadron and group levels, was on a 2,500-mile bicycle journey that started in Lubec, ME, and concluded in Key West, when he stopped at the Homestead-Miami Speedway.
West’s ride, which started on Aug. 1, took him through 16 states where he has folded and flown a U.S. flag in dedication to a Folds of Honor recipient in each state.
West was welcomed on Sept. 28 at Homestead-Miami Speedway where he honored Navy Chief Petty Officer Richard Santos with a lap around the track. Santos was a Vietnam era service member who passed away at the age of 52. His family resides in Florida and his daughter is a Folds of Honor Higher Education Scholarship recipient.
“I am raising funds and awareness for Folds of Honor, a non-profit group changing lives and supporting the legacies of our finest Americans,” Col. West said. “I came home from three combat tours and was able to help my three boys get their education and start their adult lives without any obstacles. Now I want to do my part to help make sure some young person’s future is not left on the battlefield.”
