February had to be one of the best months for outdoor activities and events in South Florida. From Miami Beach to South Dade, things have been non-stop.
EATZ , a creative food collaboration between celebrity Chef Chris Valdes and the Loews Miami Beach Hotel, attracted hundreds of foodies to the hotel on Feb. 21. Guests were treated to a perfect evening under the stars while savoring delicious food, drinks, and music with emcee Carlos Hernandez adding to the festive night. Aside from Chef Chris and Loews, partners included were Florida Dairy Farmers, Arely Ruiz PR, R Catering, Bacardi, Justin Wines, Café La Llave, and Prosecco Paradise.
Speaking of food events, on Feb. 26, Lobster Fest for the Woody Foundation was held at Coral Reef Yacht Club. Look for more on this in fuiture issue.
A rainy Sunday slightly hampered the Coconut Grove Art Festival but some artists say they sold more on that day than others. Meantime, the covered patio at Coral Gables Arts Cinema provided enough protection that stormy day for the Coral Gables Woman’s Club’s (CGWC) fundraiser event that was almost sold out. Despite the weather, spirits were not dampened as guests enjoyed a pre-movie reception with a Prosecco bar, a pink chocolate fountain for the fresh strawberries, individual charcuterie boxes and lots of popcorn for the featured French movie A Taste of Things.
Kudos to Marlin Ebbert, chair of the Coral Gables Arts Cinema, for recommending the event and helping the club coordinate this charity fundraiser. Among some of those helping CGWC fundraising chair Rita Tennyson that day were Seasha and Corey Tennyson, Carmen Suarez and Nancy Desmangles.
If you have never been to that Coral Gables Arts Cinema, you will find it is a gem in our community and one that offers great movies and a great venue for corporate and fundraising events. That Sunday charity reception and movie exposed many to the Cinema, hopefully attracting new members. Membership offers many benefits and, if you are an avid moviegoer, it is an especially great deal.
In other club news, South Miami Rotary Club’s SoMi Art Festival took place the weekend of Feb. 24-25. This popular “free” event gets larger every year and is produced by a dedicated group of volunteers who count on ongoing support from the 1st National Bank of South Miami and, this year, additional support from the City of South Miami allowing them to add a second stage on Sunset Drive near US 1.
Proceeds from the event help the club provide scholarships and donate to other charitable outreach efforts. Last year’s event raised approximately $60,000. One of the many event co-chairs, Laurie Kahn, was a recent guest on Gloria’s Gab LIVE.
The Rotary Club of Coral Gables continues to attract great guest speakers to its weekly club lunch meetings at the Hyatt Regency Coral Gables. Most recently, guest speakers included Miami Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava and Zoo Miami’s Ron Magill. Program chair Felix Pardo does an outstanding job of inviting speakers who are both educational and entertaining which adds so much to any Rotary meeting.
The Rotary Club of Coral Gables meets every Tuesday, noon, at the Hyatt Regency Coral Gables. For more information on this club, visit https://www.facebook.com/RotaryCoralGables/.
Finally, save the date, Mar. 18, for CGWC’s Gringo Bingo party at Bay 13 Breqwery & Kitchen on Alhambra across from the Hyatt Regency Coral Gables. Enjoy the antics of emcee Steven Bradley and music by DJ Germain. Admission is $30 and includes 12 games, one drink and lots of great prizes to win. Check-in starts at 6 p.m., bingo at 7-9 p.m. RSVP to gloria@cnews.net.
Until next time, share your time and talents, count your blessings, and make a difference.
