Coral Gables Woman’s Club installed 140 orchids on its property on June 24 as part of the club’s Centennial celebration projects and Fairchild’s Million Orchid Project.
Members, friends and orchids lovers gathered in the early morning at the clubhouse to be educated on the proper placement and installation of the orchids by Dr. Jason L. Downing, an orchid biologist at Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden, who leads the project.
The orchid installation is one of many events and activities this very active woman’s club, now 100 years old, has planned for 2023. For one thing, they are selling bricks that will line the pathway to the clubhouse entrance. They are very affordable and a great way to honor someone or even memorialize a special event held at the clubhouse, which is a beautiful venue for weddings, quinces, anniversary parties and more. For information on buying a brick, visit www.gfwccoralgableswomansclub.org.
After a four-year hiatus, Voices For Children is partnered with the Heat Foundation to bring back its highly anticipated “Party For A Cause” fundraiser. Supporters gathered at the Kaseya Center on June 22 for an amazing evening of fun hosted by Stuart Fort, Sophia Baker and Victor Pulido. This fundraiser brought together emerging philanthropists for a night filled with dancing, cocktails and delicious bites with proceeds benefitting critically needed support and advocacy for abused, abandoned, and neglected children in Miami-Dade’s foster care system.
Kudos to Voices For Children’s CEO Kadie Black, chair Kira Grossman, and the board for guiding and supporting this important work. Learn more about Voices For Children’s impact on the lives of the most vulnerable by viewing an interview on June 20 with Kira Grossman and Patty Vila on Facebook at https://fb.watch/lhuhAm8azJ/.
In other happenings, La Taverna Giralda recently hosted the monthly mixer for Coral Gables Bar and the Rotary Club of Coral Gables. This is a mini fundraiser of sorts for each group and is a great way to meet our local judges who receive complimentary invitations.
La Taverna Giralda owner Karen Pino was on hand to welcome Coral Gables Bar Association president Claudia Pernudi; Gables Rotary past president Kelly Garces, and members of each organization for a great social. These mixers are held the second Wednesday of every month and provide a way for each group to raise funds.
Speaking of raising funds — join the fun on July 11, 7-9 p.m., at Clutch Burger in Coral Gables on Giralda for CGWC’s monthly charity Gringo Bingo. To RSVP, send email to gloria@cnews.net.
On the entertainment front, Actors’ Playhouse brings us Defending the Cavewoman, a great one-woman show starring award-winning actress Lindsey Corey. Actors’ Playhouse Artistic Director David Arisco is directing this exciting United States premiere, a show that digs into the female mind and debunks stereotypical myths about how women think that is sure to entertain. The production runs July 19-Aug. 6, with performances Wednesday-Saturday at 8 p.m., and Sundays at 3 p.m. For tickets or information, visit www.actorsplayhouse.org.
Finally, in other news, summer brings us lots of choices for vacation fun and one of this writer’s favorite things is cruising. After experiencing a cruise on NCL’s Prima that was launched last year, one can only imagine the wonders that await NCL’s latest addition to their fleet, the Viva, that will sail out of Puerto Rico.
On June 23, NCL held a celebration at Marlins’ loanDepot Park to reveal the name of Viva’s godparent, Luis Fonsi. Fonsi, a Puerto Rican singer, songwriter and author best known for Despacito, was a great pick to represent the ship scheduled to launch this year in Miami. Look for more on this celebration next time.
Until next time, share your talents, count your blessings and not your challenges and make a difference.
