Several area women’s clubs traveled to Orlando the weekend of Sept. 22, for the (GFWC FL) General Federation of Women’s Club’s Fall Board that serves as a planning session and more.
While workshops provided great ideas and resources for members, the conference’s space alien theme brought lots of fun at night. Clubs brought bags full of blankets, teddy bears and curtains for Camp Boggy Creek, the Linda O’Toole’s President’s Project.
For those unfamiliar with Camp Boggy Creek, it was founded in 1996 by actor Paul Newman and Gen. H. Norman Schwarzkopf, with a mission of providing every child, no matter their illness, a camp experience with others challenged by same illnesses.
Every week during the camp season, different illnesses are addressed with one-on-one coaches for each child and a hospital on site with doctors specializing in the illness each week to be there to insure a safe camp experience. Each camper costs the Camp $2,500 for the one-week experience, so, several clubs also made cash donations as well.
Among the many local clubs attending the conference were Coral Gables Woman’s Club, Cocoplum Woman’s Club, Coconut Grove Woman’s Club, Miami Woman’s Club, Miami Springs and Homestead Woman’s Clubs with District 11 director Virginia Yermoli and several club presidents including Gables president Ruth Martinez, Cocoplum president Carol Noble, Miami Springs president Lynda Randolph, and Miami Woman’s Club president Shirley Pardon, to mention a few. Kudos to Carol Horkowitz, from the Gables Club, whose club digital scrapbook won first place for the Junior Director’s Choice Award.
In other news, it was a trash pickup day for many on Sept. 16. Rotarians were at Vizcaya clearing trash on that Coastal Cleanup Day and were doing such a great job they were joined by Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Cava.
Among the many volunteers from all over were Coral Gables Rotarians including Sally Baumgartner, Yoli Woodbridge, Phil Boswell, Dipak Joshi, Frank Sexton, Arturo Mancilla, Yasi Orozco, and Greg Petrino as well as several Coral Gables Senior High School Interact members.
The same morning, members of the Coral Gables Woman’s Club gathered to clean up areas around their clubhouse and beyond under the direction of CGWC’s environment chair Frances Yec. Members picked up a record 87.7 pounds of trash around the clubhouse expanding the area to three blocks in all directions to the appreciation of neighbors who now recognize this club’s effort. Among the many helping Frances at this recent cleanup were Maya Bell, Nancy Desmangles, Margaret Romero, Jelibel Pena, Meredeth and John McKissick, Alma Suarez and Ruth Martinez.
Frances invites members or anyone who wants to volunteer a few hours to join them, to meet at 9 a.m. in front of the clubhouse, 1001 E. Ponce de Leon Blvd., the second Saturday of every month. If you want to join the effort, please bring gloves and pickers if you have them.
Finally, on Oct. 10, Coral Gables Woman’s Club (CGWC) Gringo Bingo fundraiser has moved to Bay 13 across from the Hyatt Regency Coral Gables. Registration begins at 6: 30 p.m. and games start at 7 p.m. Bay 13 owners are from Australia, so, the new name for the event is Dingo Gringo Bingo with Gringo, Steven Bradley, as emcee and music by celebrity DJ Germain. CGWC will share proceeds for the October event with the National Alopecia Areata Foundation.
Tickets are $30 and include one beer or house wine, 12 games, great prizes for winners and lots of fun. To RSVP for Oct. 10 or for the next Dingo Gringo Bingo on Nov. 14, send email to Gloria@cnews.net.
