Homestead-Miami Speedway was full of activity on a recent Saturday, including Miami Exotic Auto Racing on the track’s 1.5-mile oval.
However, it was outside the oval where a younger group of enthusiasts were deriving enjoyment in another way.
Some 35-40 kids, ages 7-15, were at Homestead-Miami Speedway, where they took part in the Youth Fishing Foundation Summer Fishing Clinic, which took place at one of the Speedway’s three lakes.
The Youth Fishing Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, is dedicated to educating kids in fishing and conservation, while allowing them to enjoy the environment and helping them to become good citizens. This is the group’s 19th year of operation.
“Fishing is not only a fun sport for people of all ages, but it also is a great learning tool for kids,” said Dr. Samuel Porco, a founding member of the Youth Fishing Foundation. “We try to teach them not just about fishing, but also about conservation and to appreciate the environment in which we live. By instilling these values at an early age, they are able to appreciate these things for the rest of their lives.”
