The City of Miami is accepting applications for a potential appointment to fill an upcoming vacancy for the District 2 City Commission seat following the resignation of Commissioner Ken Russell, whose resignation is effective Jan. 3, 2023.

At the Sept. 13 city commission meeting, the commission directed the city clerk to issue a Notice of Upcoming Vacancy for District 2 City Commissioner to provide an opportunity for all interested applicants to submit résumés and qualifying documents for consideration by the city commission for a potential appointment.

The city commission may fill the vacancy for the District 2 city commission seat or call for a special election if a consensus is not reached for an appointment.

If an individual is appointed or elected to the District 2 city commission seat to fill the vacancy, the individual will serve for the remainder of the unexpired term, which will end in November 2023.

In accordance with City Charter Section 4(c), applicants for “…city commission shall have resided within the district at least one year before qualifying and be electors in that district, and shall maintain residence in that district for the duration of their term of office.”

In this case, each applicant must be an elector in District 2, and have resided within District 2 for at least one year prior to the date of qualifying.

In order to be considered for appointment, applicants must submit the following qualifying documents in person at the Office of the City Clerk located at Miami City Hall, 3500 Pan American Dr., Miami, Florida 33133:
• A completed Vacancy Affidavit of Appointment (must be notarized by City Clerk or Deputy Clerk);
• Form 1 2021 (if submitting documents on/or before Dec. 31, 2022) Statement of Financial Interests;
• Form 1 2022 (if submitting documents on/or after Jan. 1, 2023) Statement of Financial Interests;
• State of Florida Candidate Oath;
• Current résumé.

The following document(s) are optional and not required for appointment:

City of Miami Loyalty Oath.
All prospective appointees should call 305-250-5361 (TTY users may call via the Florida Relay Service by dialing 711) in advance in order to set up an appointment with the Office of the Clerk to submit qualifying documents. The Office of the City Clerk is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
