County reminds you: July is ‘Smart Irrigation Month’

7-24_Smart_Irrigation_logoDid you know that more water is used in July than any other month and most of that water goes toward keeping lawns and landscaping green?

For this reason, the Irrigation Association has named July “Smart Irrigation Month.” The Miami-Dade Water and Sewer Department (WASD) is encouraging residents to be water wise and in turn save money.

“This July, take a few minutes to identify ways that you and your family can become more water efficient and still maintain yards and landscaping beautiful,” said Lester Sola, WASD director.

One way to start conserving water is by taking advantage of WASD’s Irrigation System Evaluation Rebate Program. Single-family homeowners and multi-family properties can receive free evaluations of their current irrigation system and get rebates if the recommendations are implemented. After completing an application, property owners will receive a free evaluation by the University of Florida’s Cooperative Extension Service.

The evaluation details how to make irrigation systems more water-efficient. Homeowners who implement the recommendations within six months and provide verification of the retrofits will qualify for up to $500 in rebates per fiscal year, for up to five years. Homeowners do not need to implement all recommendations at once to be eligible for rebates. They can implement the retrofits that work best for their budget and system.

As a reminder, it is important to keep in mind that Miami-Dade County has permanent two-day-a-week landscape irrigation restrictions. Watering is not permitted between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. daily. Odd-numbered addresses may water on Wednesdays and Saturdays and even-numbered addresses may water Thursdays and Sundays from 4 p.m. to 10 a.m.
