Coral Gables Woman's Club preparing for its annual gala

The Coral Gables Woman’s Club is preparing for its annual gala, chaired by Iris Segui, on Saturday, Feb. 9, 7 p.m., at the clubhouse, 1001-9 E. Ponce de Leon Blvd. The event is a Masked Ball to benefit the club’s Coral Gables Children’s Dental Clinic.

The clinic provides more than $240,000 in free dental services to children of the working poor with 600 patients and some 2,000 procedures annually.

This year, the Mardi Gras theme promises lots of fun with cocktail hour with appetizers, dinner, dancing, open bar, silent auction chaired by Mayra Dominguez, and entertainment. Early bird tickets purchased by Feb. 1 are only $100 per person or $125 after that date. Retailers or others wishing to donate or buy tickets may send email to arely@arelypr.com.

For more information on this event, you also can visit gfwccoralgableswomansclub.org or go to Eventbrite.

Another great event that gets bigger every year is Coral Gables Rotary’s Chili Cook Off scheduled Sunday, Feb. 24, at Fred B. Hartnett Ponce Circle Park, from 1 to 5 p.m. This annual event benefits the numerous charities supported by the Rotary Club of Coral Gables Foundation.

By the way, at Rotary’s Chili Cook Off there will be a raffle and silent auction that benefit the club’s Scholarship Fund. Look for great prizes and auction items. Admission is free but there is a small charge for those who want to buy a bracelet to test the many chilis competing for cash prizes. For info on registration or sponsorship, visit chilichillin.com.

In other news, the Women’s Chamber of Commerce kicked off new year with their first “Business Before Business” Breakfast of 2019 on Jan. 16, 7:30-8:30 a.m., at venue sponsor BizNest at 2000 Ponce de Leon Blvd. This month’s breakfast was sponsored by Stress Management Counselor and Energy Therapist Paty “Mariposa” Hernandez.

Following this event and the sold out Jan. 11 installation on Royal Caribbean’s Mariner of the Seas, the chamber has a networker at BizNest, from 6 to 8 p.m., on Jan. 30.

To RSVP for these events, visit www.womenschamberofcommerce.org/wcc-events.

Yet another event being held on board a cruise ship will be the 20th anniversary Legacy Gala recognizing Thelma V.A. Gibson for her lifetime of service to the community. The gala will be held on Feb. 9, 11 a.m.-3 p.m., on the Celebrity Equinox at PortMiami, made available by Royal Caribbean chair and CEO Richard Fain.

Guests will enjoy complimentary drinks, dining, auction and entertainment coordinated by Legacy Gala chair Norma Jean Abraham with auction chair Monty Trainer and honorary chair Katherine Fernandez Rundle.

Finally, at the January lunch meeting of the Miami Woman’s Club, the club celebrated Martin Luther King Jr. Day by presenting a $1,000 check to support the historic Hampton House. Accepting the donation from the club’s board of directors was Dr. Enid C. Pickney, founding president and CEO of the Historic Hampton House Community Trust. The funds will support programs at the building that served as a hotel, restaurant, jazz club and banquet hall for the black community during segregation. Martin Luther King Jr., Muhammad Ali, Malcolm X and a long list of famous entertainers all congregated at the famous Hampton House. The luncheon also featured an engaging discussion on growing up in Miami during segregation featuring Dr. Pickney and longtime Miami Herald columnist Bea Hines.

On Martin Luther King Jr. Day, members of the Miami Woman’s Club will provide free one-day bus passes at the Omni station to honor Rosa Parks. Founded in 1900, the Miami Woman’s Club is a leading civic, social, educational and cultural organization that continues to serve the ever-changing communities of today’s Miami.

Until next time, keep making each day count.
