Coral Gables has announced the appointment of Pamela Fuertes as the city’s new Economic Development director.

Fuertes comes to the city from the distinguished and public role of vice president of International Economic Development Programs for the Miami-Dade Beacon Council, the official economic development organization for Miami-Dade County. She has more than 18 years of experience with the Beacon Council with an expertise in international business development, business innovation, corporate engagement and the creative design industry.

During her tenure, she carried out the international business recruitment strategy and led the Creative Design Initiative, an effort designed to brand and promote Miami-Dade County to companies in fashion, retail and the arts, among other creative niche sectors.

“We are fortunate to have Ms. Fuertes and her broad network of local, state and international connections at the city’s reach. An even brighter future awaits for our City Beautiful businesses,” said Cathy Swanson-Rivenbark, Coral Gables city manager.

Through her work in international business development, Fuertes has received numerous professional awards and recognitions, which include the National Order of Merit with rank of “Chevalier” by the Republic of France (November 2017) and the World Trade Center of Miami’s International Business Woman Award (March 2016).

Fuertes began her public service career in Miami-Dade County’s Office of Protocol, International Trade, and Commerce with the Office of Mayor Alex Penelas. She received an Associate in Arts from The Honors College at Miami Dade College, and a Bachelor of Arts and an MBA from the University of Miami. She is fluent in English, Spanish, French and Italian.

Fuertes will join the Economic Development Department’s six-member team in September. She will oversee the dynamic economic development program for the city, which includes business retention, business recruitment, retail development, right-sized real estate investment, and a strategic events portfolio that enhances the city’s sense-of-place and quality of life.
