Youth Fair announces dates for middle school sports invitationals

sports invitationals youth fair-minThe Miami-Dade County Youth Fair and Exposition has released the schedule for its 2017-18 middle school sports invitational meets.

The middle school division’s cross country and swimming invitational meets are scheduled for October, the bowling and track meets are booked for January, and the golf and tennis tournaments are slated for April. All events will take place at various locations throughout Miami-Dade County.

The cross-country invitational will take place on Oct. 19, 10 a.m., at Larry & Penny Thompson Park Cross Country Course, 12451 SW 184 St.,  Varsity entries are limited to 10 per team, per school. Junior varsity entries are unlimited.

The swimming invitational will take place on Oct. 28 at the Tamiami Park Pool. Warmup starts at 9 a.m. and the meet begins at 10 a.m. Entries are limited to four swimmers per school, per individual event, and one school relay. Each swimmer may enter two individual events and two relays.

Bowling teams of at least five players each will participate in the invitational on Jan. 26, 9:30 a.m., at Bird Bowl, 9275 SW 40 St. Teams are limited to two teams per school — one boys’ team and one girls’ team. Girls may try out for the boys’ team if no girls’ team is represented.

Tropical Park will host the track invitational on Jan. 27 at 9 a.m. Participation is limited to the first 20 boys’ teams and girls’ teams, and entries are limited to three per school, per event. Relays are limited to one team per school. Participants can enter up to four events. The shot-put will be 8 pounds.

The golf invitational is scheduled for 10 a.m. on Apr. 4 at Briar Bay Golf Course, 9373 SW 134 St. Teams for the nine-hole tournament are limited to four players per school. Individuals are accepted.

Tropical Tennis Center will host the tennis invitational on Apr. 12 at 9:30 a.m. Entries must include one boy and one girl for singles matches, one co-ed doubles team, one girls’ doubles team and one boys’ doubles team.

All students competing in the Miami-Dade County Fair and Exposition sports program must be enrolled officially in the school they are representing. All events are open to students in sixth through eighth grades only. Students in sixth through eighth grade who participate in high school events are not allowed to participate in the middle school division.

The Youth Fair and the Miami-Dade County Parks, Recreation and Open Spaces Department work together to promote a year-round athletic program. Annually, there are more than 2,000 public and private school students who participate in the various sporting events: swimming and diving, cross country, tennis, track, golf, bowling, wrestling and badminton. The events are open to middle and high school students.
