Elderly and disabled residents in District 9 obtained free cellphones on Tuesday, May 31, at Larcenia Bullard Plaza and JL and Enid W. Demps Park, which will serve as a critical lifeline for their health and wellness.

Miami-Dade Commissioner Kionne L. McGhee secured the funding for these cellphones, which will benefit residents impacted by the digital divide. These cellphones will allow residents to schedule transportation to and from doctor’s appointments as well as gain access to telemedicine.

“Having access to a cellphone is essential these days. It should be readily available, so our elderly and disabled residents can contact their healthcare providers as needed or obtain rides to and from their appointments. This is one small, but significant measure we can take to help make their lives easier, so they can take care of their health,” Commissioner McGhee said.

The process was seamless with 67 cellphones given directly to those in need. Residents will receive ongoing customer care during their year of free service.

The next distributions will take place on July 7 at Naranja Park and Caribbean Village Apartments and July 9 at the District 9 office in Florida City and Wilbur B. Bell Park. Participants must be pre-registered.

To register or for more information, interested consumers are encouraged to contact Michelle Fletcher, district coordinator for Commissioner McGhee, at 786-351-2988.
