The Miami-Dade County Commission recently approved a resolution sponsored by Commissioner Kionne McGhee to authorize an agreement between the county and the State of Florida to lease approximately 70 acres of land adjacent to the Homestead Air Reserve Base (HARB) to expand the Florida Army National Guard.
The agreement will allow the use of the property for purposes of national security such as building a communications and logistics readiness center and aviation readiness center, among other facilities. The expansion will also promote economic development by creating approximately 500 new jobs and investing $65 million in new infrastructure construction.
“This project brings multiple important benefits to our community by investing in economic development and public safety,” said Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava. “With the expansion of the Florida Army National Guard in Miami-Dade, we’ll increase our local capacity to respond to emergencies, better protect our residents, and create additional opportunities for working families in the South Dade community,” the mayor said.
“I am glad the county commission approved this proposal which represents an important win-win for the people in South Dade who will benefit from local investment and new jobs,” Commissioner McGhee said. “This lease proactively puts the space to good use for the betterment of the South Dade community,” he added.
“Building Florida National Guard infrastructure on Homestead Air Reserve Base will allow us to not only grow our force by further expanding into a region of immense recruiting potential, but also to be positioned to better serve the South Florida community during times of crisis,” said Maj. Gen. James Eifert, Adjutant General of the Florida National Guard.
