The history of Homestead and the history of our nation’s military are closely intertwined, so much so that the annual Military Appreciation Day event was created to strengthen the bond between Homestead’s military and civilian families.

The strength of that bond is evidenced by the many organizations involved in the events planning and execution. At the June Special Council Presentation, Vice Mayor Julio Guzman presented certificates of appreciation to those groups and organizations for their commitment and patriotism.

“We want to take a minute to recognize these individuals and organizations that not only do so much for our military community but also help to make our Military Appreciation Day event a success,” Vice Mayor Guzman said. “Because of their efforts we have the opportunity to celebrate them and the American freedom they grant us.

At the presentation, Lt. Col. Christopher Ball and CM Sergeant Ryals were present on behalf of the Florida Air National Guard 125th Fighter Wing and Lt. Col. W. McMillian was present on behalf of the Florida Army National Guard 50th Regional Support Group.

The additional groups who provided vehicles and event displays but could not attend the ceremony were the U.S. Air Force Reserve 482nd Fight Wing/Security Forces Squadron/EOD, and the United States Army Special Operations Command. These groups provided entertainment for attendees to view military vehicles that would not be normally seen by the public.

Other organizations and individuals who received recognition for their contributions were Anthony Gorman, Kathy Kiggard, David DeJohn, Hugh Hudson, the Military Affairs Council, Best Studio Inn, Eagle Brands, and Texas Roadhouse.

Military Appreciation Day is part of Military Appreciation Month, in which all Homestead residents are encouraged to honor our military in May. The event was held at Harris Field where civilians and military families came together to honor our service men and women and remind residents and visitors of their commitment to defending American freedom.
