Miami Christian’s Remy Dou, member of the school’s science faculty, was one of only 100 select educators across America to win an “ING Unsung Heroes Award.”
The annual honor came with a $2000 grant that will help fund the second portion of the MCS “Aeroponics in Space II”; a program science students will study this year. Remy also received a $4000 “National Earth Challenge” grant that will provide additional funding for the aeroponics study course.
Also preparing for the new school year isTony Vincent (at LearningInHand.com), invited as a guest lecturer during teacher orientation week to give faculty members professional development training on Internet resources to enhance student classroom learning. Vincent’s interactive training sessions make him a favorite instructor with the teachers. Training focuses on utilizing free resources on the web with much of the session centered around Google and its resources.
MCS believes in staying on top of new technologies by incorporating “Smartboards” in classrooms as well as laptop programs.
Annual “Back to School Bash” for middle and high school students gave students, faculty and staff a day of pure fun and relaxation before the start of classes.
The fun event also provided an opportunity for students to become reacquainted after the summer break, collect schedules and yearbooks, and meet new students as food, games and socializing played a key role in the annual event.
On the sports front, football and volleyball practices are in full swing as MCS athletes work out for the forthcoming fall sports season. Even before the school year starts, the discipline and rigor of preparing with daily practices begins. MCS enjoyed winning five district championships last year and this year’s’ teams look to repeat and even beat last year’s record.
MCS’s good friend, Lynn Bauer, recently returned from India where she visited the orphans at Sunil’s Home, bringing photos and letters from students as well as funding raised at MCS to purchase three computers. for the Home.
MCS students fund raising for Sunil’s Home is an act of love with the elementary students regularly selling lemonade, cookies and herbs from their Organic Garden while the High School ‘s Beta Club holds a variety of activities to further bankroll contributions. money to the cause. All are pleased to help change the lives of children who were literally rescued from the streets, and are looking forward to Bauer’s next visit in mid- September to help our friends in India.
On the alumni front, MCS graduate, Chrissy Stachl (‘09) recently completed a summer program at Yale University and is now studying in Italy in a program related to her premedical studies. She’ll continue undergraduate studies in the fall at the University of Washington in Seattle, where she attends as a Gates Millennium Scholar, a full scholarship program.
