40 Homestead High students on college tour with help from Kiwanis, community
Members of the Kiwanis Club of Homestead-South Dade present a check for $1,000 to Homestead Senior High School for the College and Career Club’s college tour.

Forty members of Homestead Senior High School’s College and Career Club have embarked on a three-day, five-college tour thanks to the Kiwanis Club of Homestead-South Dade and the South Florida community.

The tour, scheduled for Mar. 19-21, includes the University of Florida, Santa Fe College, Florida State, Florida A&M and the University of Central Florida, and marks the first college tour in the school’s 45-year history.

The Kiwanis Club of Homestead-South Dade, one of South Florida’s most active community service organizations, donated $1,000 to the school for the trip and helped publicize the school’s needs to make the community aware of the importance of such a trip. That donation — and the subsequent public relations blitz — helped the school reach its fund-raising goal of $13,000.

“Our students will now have the opportunity to visit five outstanding colleges throughout Florida thanks to the Kiwanis Club of Homestead,” said Homestead Senior High principal Samuel J. Louis. “In addition to their donation, Kiwanis — through exposure in the media — galvanized the community to step up, which they did. Kiwanis and the community realized the importance of equipping our students with the resources and information they need to continue their educational journey.”

Heading up the program for Homestead Senior is Michelle Conde, College and Career Club sponsor.

“Our students are thrilled that this college tour has become a reality,” Conde said. “These young adults will now be able to experience the many post-secondary options that Florida can offer them.”

One student, College Club vice president Julia Orellana, summed up her and her classmates’ anticipation.

“We’re really excited to go on this college tour,” said the 15-year-old sophomore who has a 4.7 grade point average. “It (fundraising) wasn’t easy. We weren’t sure we were going to go. Now, it gives us the opportunity to see what’s out there early in the application process. FSU is my first choice, but I’m excited to see UF and Santa Fe.”

Kiwanis officials, realizing the importance of such a trip to the students, responded quickly to the school’s needs.

“We’re proud to be part of this successful effort,” said Kiwanis president-elect Janina Carranza. “It’s an investment not only in the students but in the future of our community.”
