South Miami-Dade-based Assurant and the Southern Florida chapter of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS) have announced that Assurant employees raised more than $14,800 to help beat cancer and provide critical support to patients and their families.
The funds were raised through LLS’ Light The Night Walk, an annual event where teams of family, friends and coworkers participate in events across the United States and Canada.
Thousands of participants carry illuminated balloons — white for survivors, red for supporters and gold in memory of loved ones lost to cancer — during leisurely walks across the nation’s communities. Their treks promote caring and help to shed light on the dark image of cancer. Millions of consumers also support their efforts by donating money at retail outlets.
Inspiring stories help motivate Light The Night Walk participants, and Assurant’s inspiration came from current employee Humberto Camejo (IT) and past employee Art Heggen (retired executive). Both are survivors of blood cancers and serve as continued motivation for Assurant employees to raise funds for LLS.
“We are grateful to Assurant and its employees, family and friends who supported this year’s Walk,” said Jill Nugent, campaign manager. “Their participation goes a long way toward bringing attention to the critical need to fund lifesaving cancer research and support services for patients and their families.”
This year’s Miami-Dade Walk took place on Nov.10 at Bayfront Park in downtown Miami. More than $50 million was raised through Light The Night Walks in approximately 185 communities in North America.
