Rodrick T. Miller, president and CEO of the Beacon Council in Miami-Dade County, told viewers of a recent Mobility Matters podcast that while Miami is still a young city, it has great infrastructure and is an ambitious community that welcomes new residents and industry.

The Beacon Council is a public-private partnership charged with growing the economy of Miami-Dade County. Miller said it has been instrumental in bringing job investments to the region.

“Last year we brought 5,700 new direct jobs and 15,000 overall jobs to Miami-Dade County, with an average wage of about $100,000,” Miller said. “We did 51 deals. Of the 51 deals, 27 were companies from outside of Miami-Dade and 24 of the deals were companies that were already here. It’s about retaining and growing.”

In the podcast interview with Citizens’ Independent Transportation Trust executive director and host Javier Betancourt, Miller emphasized Miami’s robust trade and logistics infrastructure as a cornerstone of the local economy. With a significant portion of jobs in Miami-Dade County linked to trade, the county’s strategic location and transportation networks play a vital role in its economic prosperity.

“We’ve got a huge trade and logistics and transportation infrastructure on the commercial side, and that’s one of the big strengths of our community,” he said. “We do have some traffic challenges, but part of the story is that the reason why we have those traffic challenges is because this market is experiencing incredible economic growth.

“We’re competing with the most dynamic cities in the world, so we’ve got to have an infrastructure that matches that. We know that we’ve got to make investments in transit.

We’ve got to make it in water and sewer and the types of things that a world-class city like us must have,” Miller said.

Miller outlined the multi-pillar plan the Beacon Council has for the next three to five years, focusing on economic growth through a combination of attracting new businesses, retaining existing ones, and fostering their expansion: Grow smart, sustainable, inclusive and competitive; tell the Miami story around the world, and focus on talent.
