It only takes one moment to ignite the spark of change and unite the community. That moment was when Miguel Luciano, actor on Nickelodeon’s Talia in the Kitchen, saw the coverage on the local news station about the aftermath of Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico.

“The tragic irony was that I was sitting at home looking for something to watch on my television, when so many people in Puerto Rico, and even Mexico, barely have a roof over their head,” Luciano said.

He decided he had to do his part and give back to these people who had lost so much.

Miguel quickly reached out to his contacts and social networks, explaining his frustration and thirst to make a change and contribute some relief. Within 24 hours, countless friends had reached out, offering their help, services, and time.

“Seeing how many people were also desperate to help out but unaware how to do so, was enlightening and amazing,” he said. “Owners of small and large companies donating their services, and supremely talented performers in my networks offering their gifts, were the two aspects that led me to believe a benefit concert and fundraiser would be the perfect way to make a difference.”

Fast forward a couple days: Miguel has secured a partner with Miami Children’s Theater, a nonprofit organization, and a venue with the Dave and Mary Alper JCC. Several local students, teachers, and Miami natives will be singing, dancing, playing guitar, and performing spoken word for the event.

“In a miraculous way, this fundraiser concert became a community outreach event and it is revealing the true human spirit and compassion that resides in us all,” Luciano said.

The performers include University of Miami students, Miami Children’s Theater performers, Trendz Dance Studio students, and more.

In addition to the performances, the event will have a silent auction and a raffle, and all of the funds will be evenly dispersed to Unidos For Puerto Rico, Fondo Unido Mexico, and Feeding South Florida, for the victims of Puerto Rico, Mexico and the Florida Keys.

“All of these affected areas need our love and Miami is giving back,” said Luciano, who will emcee the event.

The event, Brighter Days Ahead: Miami Gives Back, is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 28, 7 p.m., at Dave and Mary Alper JCC, 11155 SW 112 Ave. Tickets for the event are $20. You can buy tickets at www.miamichildrenstheater.com.
