Building Unity in South Dade at “A Night in D9”

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

Oftentimes, we speak about creating unity, whether that be within our schools or within our communities, but we don’t always get to see it in action.  It is rare, in fact, that we have the opportunity to attend an event or to meet an individual who truly strives to build meaningful relationships in an effort to create such unity.  School Board Member Luisa Santos is one of those unique individuals.

As a PTA leader, I had the privilege of participating in Ms. Santos’ signature event, “A Night in D9,” on April 15th.  Beyond connecting with our friends and families, this event allowed our organization to be a part of something bigger than just our school or even the Village of Pinecrest.  We were able to promote our PTA and our school to community members from nearby neighborhoods.  We interacted with organizations that we have communicated with in the past but have never been able to meet face-to-face.  Additionally, we were able to connect with new organizations and community members who were interested in supporting our PTA’s mission.

It was a joy to see everyone come together in celebration of the community we have built in District 9.  The sense of diversity, unity, and inclusion on that day was unparalleled.  As we move forward, it is important that we continue to hear from and uplift community voices from across South Dade.  I am thankful to School Board Member Santos for modeling what this looks like.
