The report is required by the county to maintain and report the status of the town’s Floodplain Management Plan credit under the Community Rating System (CRS). The program was created in 1998 through funding provided by the State of Florida.
Besides Miami-Dade County, the working group also includes state and federal agencies, colleges, universities, schools, hospitals, non-profit organizations and private sector companies. The group meets on a quarterly basis to review the status of the projects.
One current project involves cleaning canals and other drainage pathways to ensure that they are free-flowing to help prevent flooding.
Town manager Rafael G. Casals explained how the report helps with funding in case of emergencies.
“The LMS document is a vital tool identifying specific town projects aimed at mitigating the potential of property loss caused by a natural disaster,” Casals said. “In the event of an emergency declaration, grant funding will be identified for eligible projects which are included within each agencies LMS project bank. Projects identified within the LMS also receive preference points for various state and federal grants during non-emergency declarations.”
