Cutler Bay Farmer’s Market opens along Old Cutler Road

By Gary Alan Ruse….

A variety of produce, like these oranges, is available each week.

Residents now can find locally grown fruits and vegetables at the Cutler Bay Farmer’s Market every Sunday. It’s located on Old Cutler Road at SW 87th Avenue, and owner Maria Stephano is enjoying seeing folks turn out for the family business’ weekly events.

“We’ve been open about two months now,” Stephano said. “We sell fresh produce; we sell foods of all sorts. We have vegan Indian food; we have barbecue, ceviches and guacamole, arepas, gourmet cupcakes and cookies.”

Family activities include face painting for the kids as well as pony rides, something that is fun for the youngsters and nostalgic for adults who remember their own childhood.

Also there is the “Wing Commander,” a mobile gourmet food wagon that has chicken wings, burgers and fries, sliders and Chili-Cheese Chippies. It’s a family business whose owners are residents of Cutler Bay.

The Farmer’s Market is open every Sunday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and it’s not just about food.

“We have a bunch of different arts and crafts items made by local artists,” Stephano said. “Most of the vendors are residents of Cutler Bay. We have live music as well, with local bands and school musicians, too. We try to keep it open for all the local people to come out. We also have all sorts of wonderful plants and native palm trees.”

Whitney Farms, which used to maintain a stand and small restaurant in Cutler Bay, is among the vendors at the new farmers market.
