A droopy leaf or brown patch on a fern or spruce is no match for Sandy Dayhoff and her neighbors at East Ridge at Cutler Bay senior living community. Together, this group of a dozen or so seniors puts their community’s greenhouse to good use by reviving and selling native plants while creating an environment that also nurtures friendships.
The greenhouse is located at East Ridge. It’s home to countless orchids, mother in laws tongues, ferns, spruces, butterfly plants, and so much more. All East Ridge residents can use the space to grow, donate and rejuvenate their own plants.
Sandy, who leads the effort to restore plants, says she’s had a green thumb since childhood. She was born and raised in the Miami area and later dug her roots into Everglades National Park, becoming a park ranger. Now as a resident at East Ridge at Cutler Bay, she’s delighted the greenhouse has become a space for her and her neighbors to get their hands dirty in the soil while laughing together and enjoying a shared hobby.
It’s also notable that their fondness for gardening offers many benefits not just for the plants they tend. In fact, studies show activities like gardening have many health benefits for seniors. These types of activities can prevent osteoporosis and even reduce the risk of some cancers, depression, diabetes, and heart disease – to name just a few.
Every Tuesday from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., the public can visit and purchase any of the plants grown by the residents.
