I’m proud of Cutler Bay.
I don’t get to say that very often about any local government, but Cutler Bay deserves it. Foresight and fortitude has now positioned the Town and its residents to take a leap into the future in March to make it possible to apply a General Obligation Bond to build a park, community center and town hall on 16 acres at the heart of the community.
The property at Old Cutler Road and Southwest 212 Street was part of a land swap that exchanged the current Town Hall property, an adjacent parcel and $3 million for the 16 acres. Vacant land that could have become up to 480 residences and accompanying cars are now imagined as a beautiful park that will continue to grow Cutler Bay’s reputation as a community led by thoughtful residents with a long game that will yield benefits for generations.
Here’s the important point: the election is mail-in only, so residents have to monitor their mailboxes to make sure they get the ballot and vote on time. Ballots will automatically be mailed to registered voters in Cutler Bay between March 2-12. Ballots must be received by the Miami-Dade County Elections Department by no later than 7 p.m. on March 22.
To be clear, there is no final plan for the property, but the funds have to be dedicated to the park project first and then meetings will be held over the next 12 months to determine which design is best. Town leaders will then vote on the final plan.
I want this plan to pass because few communities get to commit to create a transformational focal point for residents that will be the talk of South Florida and serve as a marker for other villages, towns and cities across the state and beyond. Once the Cutler Bay park project is completed, it will tell the story of residents with vision who invested in their futures by looking beyond short-term gains.
When the park project is completed, I will be proud that I stood with the visionaries in the Town who took their shot at making smart planning dreams come true by voting for a better future for Cutler Bay.
