The Deering Estate is hosting a two-day Cultural Heritage Symposium on June 14-15, 2024. This year’s theme “Our Shared Sea – Coastal Archaeological Heritage in the Caribbean Basin” focuses on coastal archaeological heritage threatened by climate change. It encourages dialogue and collaboration among researchers, resource managers, policymakers, communities, and the public, developing shared strategies for heritage preservation.
The symposium looks at the threat that climate change poses to coastal archaeological sites globally and emphasizes the urgent need for new strategies in public archaeology and cultural resource management. It aims to connect researchers, academics, and cultural resource managers from all over the globe to exchange ideas and practices around preserving coastal cultural heritage threatened by climate change. The discussions will highlight examples of where partnerships and community engagement in public archaeology are essential in making heritage management relevant to a wider population, gathering meaningful data, and building collective resilience in coastal heritage.
“We are delighted to co-present this vital symposium with our partners. The Deering Estate, an important cultural resource deeply embedded in our community, is the perfect venue for this gathering. This symposium underscores the importance of multi-vocal approaches to decisionmaking and collaboration to address critical issues such as the impacts of climate change on coastal archaeological sites. By co-producing and sharing knowledge, research, and discovery, we aim to foster innovative strategies and build collective resilience to protect our shared heritage,” said Deering Estate Director Jennifer Tisthammer.
